What is Dyslexia?

Understanding the 2024 Definition of Dyslexia

The way dyslexia is understood has developed. The 2024 Delphi definition of dyslexia recognises that dyslexia involves persistent difficulties with reading and/or spelling and that a range of underlying factors may contribute to the difficulties a child experiences.

A diagnostic assessment therefore looks at much more than whether a child can read or spell. It considers their literacy skills alongside areas such as phonological processing, memory, processing speed and language, as well as their learning history and the support they have received.
