How do I know if my child needs a dyslexia assessment?
Children and young people with dyslexia can present very differently. Some have obvious difficulties with reading and spelling, while others develop strategies that can make their difficulties less noticeable.
You may consider an assessment if your child experiences ongoing difficulties with areas such as:
Reading accurately or fluently
Spelling and remembering spelling patterns
Phonics or decoding unfamiliar words
Remembering and following verbal information
Working quickly and efficiently with written information
Organising ideas for writing
Remembering things they have previously learned
Becoming frustrated, anxious or lacking confidence with literacy-based tasks
A diagnostic assessment looks at the overall pattern of strengths and difficulties, alongside your child’s developmental and educational history, rather than relying on any single test or difficulty.

Learner profile / screener vs full diagnostic assessment
A dyslexia screening can help identify whether a child shows indicators associated with dyslexia and whether further assessment may be appropriate. It does not provide a formal diagnostic conclusion.
A full diagnostic dyslexia assessment is much more comprehensive. It considers literacy skills alongside the underlying areas associated with dyslexia and takes account of the learner’s background, educational history and individual profile.
Following both assessments, you will receive a detailed written report, a diagnostic conclusion where appropriate, and individual recommendations for school and home.
What happens after the assessment?
Following the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive written report within three weeks. Your report will include:
A clear explanation of your child’s individual strengths and areas of difficulty
A detailed analysis of their literacy and underlying cognitive profile
Standardised assessment results explained in clear, accessible language
A diagnostic conclusion based on the 2024 Delphi Consensus Definition of Dyslexia
Individual recommendations and practical strategies for school and home
Reports are written in line with current professional standards and can be shared with school to help inform appropriate support and reasonable adjustments. Where appropriate, the report can also provide evidence to support consideration of exam access arrangements.
An optional feedback consultation is also available if you would like to talk through the findings in more detail, ask questions and discuss the recommended next steps for your child.
